LIGHTNING STRIKES GREENTREE II 2013

On Saturday, October 12th, members of the WPPBF proudly supported our member and friend, Rod Salka, as he battled for his title defense and won the IBO title in a ten round win. We also gladly supported other local fighters who back the WPPBF and our mission. One of those fighters was Jason Bergman who had an impressive first round KO over Buster Douglas's undefeated heavyweight. It was awesome. Thanks to all who helped out!

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH VISIT

On Friday, August 2, 2013, WPPBF Executive Board Members Rich Griffith (President), Drew Volchko (Secretary) and Tim Kreger (Treasurer) joined forces with some of the fastest fists in Pittsburgh and visited the children at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The WPPBF took three of the top area boxers who are equally highly ranked nationally: Champion Rod Salka, Champion Paul Spadafora and Top Contender Monty Clay to tour the hospital and meet with many of the children that are in title fights of their own. To quote Monty Clay, “These kids are in tougher fights than any of us have ever fought!” With the assistance of Five Below, we were able to deliver personal mini boxing glove sets to approximately 25-30 children ranging in ages from 2-18 years and who are battling devastating illnesses.

The boxers all took the time from their busy training regimens and schedules to volunteer with us to help the kids. Not only did they cheer the kids up and give them reasons to smile, the boxers helped to inspire the parents who are also facing the toughest challenges we could ever imagine. Our guys were great sports — gloving, gowning and disinfecting over and over — whatever they needed to do to visit more of the children, they gladly did. Many of the kids took some tips from the boxers and learned to throw some potent combinations of their own.

We are all glad that we were able to be part of this extraordinary event and represent the WPPBF board and membership. The smiles that the boxers brought out on the faces of the children visited was worth a million dollars.
